Get to Know RCS Designer Javier Cortés

By May 10, 2017Featured, Uncategorized

As we continue our “Get to Know RCS” series in honor of our 20th anniversary this year, this week we’re shining the spotlight one of our most talented designers, Javier Cortés. A stalwart at the company since 2006, he was initially reluctant to take time away from his busy schedule to chat with us, but after some convincing, showed good sportsmanship and sat down with us for an interview, which you can check out below.

When did you start working at RCS?

I started working at RCS about 10 and a half years ago.

What attracted you to RCS?

When I started, I really liked that RCS worked on a range of projects from on-air graphics to commercials, TV shows and movies. We’re more focused now, which I like even more.

Tell us about your background.

I have been designing for over 20 years now. I started in print design, and then moved to web design and finally found my sweet spot in broadcast graphics.

What have you learned from working at RCS?

I’ve learned mostly not to get too attached to my work. I make recommendations on what something should look like, but ultimately the client has the last word.

Describe your team in three words.

Cool, calm, collected

What’s an average day at the office like for you?

Coffee, music and work. Although that may sound mundane, a lot happens as I sit at my little workstation. I research looks and techniques, experiment with designs and create images that will eventually be seen by millions.

What keeps you coming back to work at RCS each day?

I like what I do.

Where have your adventures at RCS taken you?

I’ve visited so many places while working at RCS that it’s all a big blur.

What is your all-time favorite RCS memory?

I really enjoyed going to Germany to pitch for ARD1, (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der öffentlich-rechtlichen Rundfunkanstalten der Bundesrepublik Deutschland); yes, it’s a mouthful, but it was a really fun experience, plus nothing can beat the pork knuckle and pint of beer I had after the pitch.

Which RCS project has been your favorite to work on?

Sky Sport Germany hands down.

How has technology changed since you started working at RCS?

Computers are faster, monitors are bigger and software is more efficient.

What is your favorite show today, and what was your favorite show 20 years ago?

Wow, to think we have people in our company who were enjoying the letter of the day on Sesame Street 20 years ago… *sigh. Today, I like “Game of Thrones” and “The Walking Dead.” 20 years ago, I was all about “X-Files,” of course.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I enjoy jiu jitsu; it clears my mind and keeps me healthy.

Who is your favorite sports team?

I don’t have one.

What is your favorite sport to watch, and to play?

I like MMA, but frankly, I’d rather watch than play.

Who would play you in a movie, and why?

Dwayne Johnson. A lot of people think he’s my doppleganger.

What did you last Google?

The benefits of drinking apple cider vinegar. Did you know that one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar a day can help heartburn and acid reflux, promote healthy cholesterol, aid in weight loss and more? Don’t believe me, go Google it!

What’s your favorite emoji?

I rather not say…It’s brown with a smiley face.

Where haven’t you traveled that you would like to visit?

Tokyo.
